Why do we let the media control us?

What happened to the good old days where we could wear whatever we liked and not be judged for it. Why is it that once we all hit a certain age it seems that media within society takes control of this. That we all of a sudden feel like we must conform to be able to be accepted. That our natural self is no longer acceptable and that we must change how we act and what we wear. This is something that, as being a young female in this crazy world, I have had to deal with for the majority of my life.

I have always been quite thin and tall for my age, but that is through no control of my own. I swear, if I didn’t have the metabolism that I have I would be the size of a house from the amount of food I eat. I just can’t help it. Though people who I meet don’t know this and even from a young age I have been told that I was anorexic by certain people and even told that I was underweight due to certain BMI testings though I would never consider myself to be underweight. I did a lot of physical activity and then combine that with a super fast metabolism thanks to my family and you have me. And unfortunately I fit the description of what the media portrays to be ‘ideal’ for females around my age. I’m not trying to sound up myself or anything because that isn’t the type of person that I am, but every time I go out somewhere nice I get told that someone ‘hates’ me (always through a jokingly way they tell me) as well as every time I am at the beach or just swimming at the pool.

I hate that the social media has put in everyone’s mind that their is only one type of beautiful and that you can’t possibly be beautiful unless you match this description. What would be the point if everyone looked exactly the same? It is complete and utter nonsense if you ask me. This image that gets thrown around so much is literally ruining so many peoples lives. They go through diets and fads, do ridiculous amounts of exercise and some even go through cosmetic surgery so that they can ‘feel’ beautiful. Half of the time you see before and after pictures and they looked much better before they did all of this ridiculous things to their body. YES you should eat healthy. YES you should exercise. But NO you should not just have smoothies and shakes as supplements to real food to lose weight. If you eat, drink and live healthy then you will be healthy and that is possibly the most beautiful anyone could ever be. We shouldn’t be some big competition with random strangers to be the best looking, because everyone is different and they are all beautiful in their own way.

No one is perfect in this world. And if you think someone is, think again. Everyone you see in magazines and on television. All of the actors and models, that isn’t what they are really like. That is after make up has covered up all of their impurities and sometimes even photo shop is used to make sure that they are ‘perfect’. The media’s idea of ‘perfect’.

I was reading a blog earlier today by a man named Matt Walsh who wrote a letter to his daughter, who is a baby now but who he wishes doesn’t get corrupted by all of this illusion of being ‘beautiful’ in the eyes of the media.

But that’s the price of living in a culture of consumerism, where we spend every waking minute surrounded by advertisements and product placement. Everyone’s got something to sell, and very few of them are selling anything you need. So, to compensate, the peddlers pull out their shotguns and blow giant holes in your psyche. Then they convince you that they’ve got the perfect thing to plug the gaps. They try to create a void in your conscience, so they can start pouring their poison into it. As far as this strategy goes, constructing an unachievable, inhuman, digitized idea of beauty is the ultimate scam. And it’s paid dividends.

This is just small section of his post but he goes on to talk about how as a female you don’t have to give into all of the superficial ideas on how to look. I seriously recommend reading the entire post and so I will put a link to it at the bottom.

I really hope that society does change. That people can be comfortable in the way that they look without feeling like every second person is judging them for their hair, clothes and body shape. Don’t let people tell you that you aren’t beautiful because you are more beautiful than those telling you you’re not. If you aren’t a beautiful person on the inside it is going to shine through to the outside and people will see their true colours, however if you are an honest and beautiful person on the inside you become instantly more beautiful regardless of anything the media is trying to say. Keep being the beautiful person you are and be happy for being you, not for being the person sitting next to you!

Red Jumpsuit Apparatus!!!

So Thursday night was pretty exciting because I got to go to a concert. The first one in a very long time and I am so thankful that I got to go. Not only did I get to see The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, I also got to experience 4 new bands which were also amazing to hear live! I really wanted to talk about this because even though I have been to concerts before, this felt like a very new experience to anything I had experienced before.

The atmosphere is always very different where ever you go, and even from different concerts. I mean the only other concerts I had been to were Eskimo Joe and Short Stack. These two different concerts had a very, VERY different atmosphere about them. My age at the time could also have an impact on how I find the space and how involved I get into each band. In both of these concerts I was close to the front however I was on the very side so I never really got the full experience of a ‘mosh pit’. However this time was incredible, being slightly off centre and second row back from the front. There really wasn’t much I couldn’t see, especially since I am super tall I can see over everyone’s heads anyway (I’m sure I caused a few people to not have as good of a time as I probably blocked their view for the most part…oh well).

During one of the support acts a lot of different things happened, all creating a very memorable performance and allows you to remember what type of people there are in society. So the story basically goes like this: The band that was playing was called ‘Red Beard’, they are a really good band however they were a little heavier than all of the other bands that played this night. Of course when you have bands that are heavy and there are a group of people at the concert that love the band, things get a little crazy. One man, well I don’t know if I would actually call him a man after everything that happened, decided that throwing his shirt as well as one of his shoes onto stage would be a brilliant idea and that the band would love that. Now I was at this concert with a good friend of mine who had changed her shirt at the beginning of the night after we both bought a Red Jumpsuit Apparatus shirt and she had her other shirt tucked into the back of her pants. So this same guy who lost his shirt and shoe already came up to try and buy her shirt from her because he was now standing basically half naked. He pulls out his wallet only to find that there was no cash what so ever inside. He says something that we both missed due to the noise and he turns away. He soon returns with a $10 note which he probably got from one of his friends and proceeds to try to convince her to give him her shirt. Talking is going on for a little bit and he just puts the money in her hand and takes the shirt, putting it on telling her that he will get her a Red Beard shirt at the end of the night.

Now you would think that would be the end of it, you would be wrong. The same guy and a couple of his mates decided to barge through to the front of the barrier which made the security guards become quite alert. Then next thing you know they have climbed onto the barrier and jumped onto the stage. All they needed was one person to do it and then it suddenly became acceptable in their minds that they could do it also. So there were three random guys on the stage during their performance which completely ruined my experience listening to Red Beard because we just kept being interrupted. Making things a little more annoying the guy that bought my friends shirt proceeded to take it off while on stage and throw it into the audience, we were not going to get it back, nor did we really want it back. At least one good thing came about all of this and that is that my friend left $10 up. Thankfully the guys that got on stage were kicked out and the rest of the night was amazing.

We finally get to the main act, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and my goodness were they amazing! I will admit that I hadn’t heard of them before my friend asked me whether I wanted to go to their concert, but since then I have fallen in love with them and it was unbelievable that I was able to be so close to them and to hear them live, which is just as good as listening to their recordings. That is when you know that they are a really good band, because they don’t need all of the auto tuning that so many artists use these days to make sure that they are ‘perfect’. In all honesty they are the best band I have heard live so far (I know that I haven’t seen many but it still counts). The energy at the venue rose considerably when they came on, everyone was jumping and singing, screaming at the top of their lungs and it just made the whole night better to be surrounded by all of these people who came for the same reason that you have, to just come and have a good time listening to an amazing band!

At the end of it all each of the band members threw out a piece of paper as well as picks and the drum sticks. I was literally 2cm away from catching the paper Ronnie threw out. It touched my fingers and if me and my friend swapped positions I would have gotten it. That always seems to happen to me though, I get so close to getting something but I always just miss out. I won’t let that happen at the end of the month when I go to Warped though, I will get something from Hands Like Houses. But now I am off topic…so back to Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.

After they all left the stage not many people moved. All of a sudden a roar of voices started from the crowd ‘ONE MORE SONG’ and ‘ENCORE’ were being screamed out for a good 5 or 10 minutes. We could see some of the stage managers at the side of the stage signalling to stop because they weren’t going to come back out. Due to this several people started to pile out of the venue, two of which were standing right in front me and my friend. We both kind of looked at each other and moved up to the railing and continued to shout out. Then Ronnie walked back out with one of the guys that do all of the sound testing for them and handed him his guitar. He talked with us all for a little, trying to decide on what song to play. He asked us all and we (me, my friend and a random girl standing next to us) decided he should play his favourite song but he couldn’t hear if only one of us called out, so with some quick preparation we called out together and he looked at us and was like ‘I like that’. He then decided on what song to play. It wasn’t one that any of us had heard before. That is because he had never played it outside of the recording studio and it was to be released in their upcoming album next year. This really brought the concert to a very memorable close, to be one of the first people to hear the song, months before everyone else.

So at the end of the night I didn’t leave with anything from the band them selves but I did leave with an awesome shirt, a cd (deluxe edition with bonus dvd) and new EP from Red Jumpsuit Apparatus as well as two albums from Double Lined Minority who were the first support act. As well as this I left with amazing memories and a night that I will never forget. What about everyone else, what experiences have you had at concerts whether they are good, bad; funny, sad. Who have you gone to see, and what was your favourite band?

Global Warming??

We all know that it exists and is only getting worse as each year passes. As a society in a whole we produce too much carbon which is then released into the atmosphere which then traps the heat from the sun in our atmosphere. It basically creates this barrier that heat can pass through but when it goes to leave it is sent back down to Earth. As this happens temperatures rise and natural disasters begin to occur more and more. Things like bush fires due to drier land and cyclones/typhoons/hurricanes due to warmer water. Not only these things occurring more often but can occur earlier and longer then previously.

This has been proven by many scientists and can be found in many different articles. One graph from an article shows the temperature from Earth showing the constant change between Ice Ages and warmer periods in which we live in today. This graph shows that the Earth has a natural cycle between hot and cold, both going to extremes, however because of the effect we are having on the plant this process is speeding up. The cycle will take the same amount of time though the planet is warming at a much higher rate. This can cause the planet to experience very extreme conditions before it begins to cool again, and it is not guaranteed that it will cool back down to where it had many times before. There is a very high chance, that because of global warming that the temperature will only drop the same amount as it has in the past, therefore making the next upcoming ice age to be warmer than before. This can then throw the balance of the Earth’s temperature off, making each cycle warmer and warmer. This graph shows only the past 150 years, though you can clearly see the rise in temperatures and how dramatically they have begun to rise in the last 50 years or so.

The CO2 levels have also been recorded from Antartica and graphed to show how the levels have changed over the past 400,000 years. This graph is only relevant up to the year 2000 however it shows the trend that it is raising to higher CO2 levels at a faster rate. Before this the levels were changing at a very constant and consistent level, rising and falling between 200 and 300 ppmv. Though in the matter the last few decades it seems, it has risen to 370 ppmv. This is why we have to do something about global warming, or else these things are going to continue to occur.

What makes these matters worse is that Australia’s own Environmental Minister, Mr Greg Hunt, believes that these facts have nothing to do with the recent bush fires that are engulfing through New South Wales. He publicly states that he referenced wikipedia as his main source of information stating that bush fires were common in Australia within the warmer months and that it has no link to Global Warming. He goes on to state that “Bush fires happen in hot weather”. The chief executive of The Climate Institute, John Connor, spoke shortly after Mr Hunt gave his interview and stated the following:

“But what we also do know is the data is clear, the forest fire danger index has been increasing… and particularly in spring and autumn, which means that the fire weather season has been extending. And all of the projections for climate change and for global warming, is that they will increase and increase exponentially.”

You can read the whole article at the link below, it is really eye opening to realise how the people we have working in our government think about this issue and how our country is represented. It seems like after reading this, that a few members of the coalition party are oblivious to what has been occurring around the world for the past decade, and that it could be an easy fix if they consulted some scientists and started to understand climate change. I hope that things will change in regards to climate change because if we don’t then we are only going to be killing off our planet little by little. We have to think about future generations and how they are going to live. If we don’t change now then it will soon be too late to make the difference count.
