So Thursday night was pretty exciting because I got to go to a concert. The first one in a very long time and I am so thankful that I got to go. Not only did I get to see The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, I also got to experience 4 new bands which were also amazing to hear live! I really wanted to talk about this because even though I have been to concerts before, this felt like a very new experience to anything I had experienced before.
The atmosphere is always very different where ever you go, and even from different concerts. I mean the only other concerts I had been to were Eskimo Joe and Short Stack. These two different concerts had a very, VERY different atmosphere about them. My age at the time could also have an impact on how I find the space and how involved I get into each band. In both of these concerts I was close to the front however I was on the very side so I never really got the full experience of a ‘mosh pit’. However this time was incredible, being slightly off centre and second row back from the front. There really wasn’t much I couldn’t see, especially since I am super tall I can see over everyone’s heads anyway (I’m sure I caused a few people to not have as good of a time as I probably blocked their view for the most part…oh well).
During one of the support acts a lot of different things happened, all creating a very memorable performance and allows you to remember what type of people there are in society. So the story basically goes like this: The band that was playing was called ‘Red Beard’, they are a really good band however they were a little heavier than all of the other bands that played this night. Of course when you have bands that are heavy and there are a group of people at the concert that love the band, things get a little crazy. One man, well I don’t know if I would actually call him a man after everything that happened, decided that throwing his shirt as well as one of his shoes onto stage would be a brilliant idea and that the band would love that. Now I was at this concert with a good friend of mine who had changed her shirt at the beginning of the night after we both bought a Red Jumpsuit Apparatus shirt and she had her other shirt tucked into the back of her pants. So this same guy who lost his shirt and shoe already came up to try and buy her shirt from her because he was now standing basically half naked. He pulls out his wallet only to find that there was no cash what so ever inside. He says something that we both missed due to the noise and he turns away. He soon returns with a $10 note which he probably got from one of his friends and proceeds to try to convince her to give him her shirt. Talking is going on for a little bit and he just puts the money in her hand and takes the shirt, putting it on telling her that he will get her a Red Beard shirt at the end of the night.
Now you would think that would be the end of it, you would be wrong. The same guy and a couple of his mates decided to barge through to the front of the barrier which made the security guards become quite alert. Then next thing you know they have climbed onto the barrier and jumped onto the stage. All they needed was one person to do it and then it suddenly became acceptable in their minds that they could do it also. So there were three random guys on the stage during their performance which completely ruined my experience listening to Red Beard because we just kept being interrupted. Making things a little more annoying the guy that bought my friends shirt proceeded to take it off while on stage and throw it into the audience, we were not going to get it back, nor did we really want it back. At least one good thing came about all of this and that is that my friend left $10 up. Thankfully the guys that got on stage were kicked out and the rest of the night was amazing.
We finally get to the main act, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and my goodness were they amazing! I will admit that I hadn’t heard of them before my friend asked me whether I wanted to go to their concert, but since then I have fallen in love with them and it was unbelievable that I was able to be so close to them and to hear them live, which is just as good as listening to their recordings. That is when you know that they are a really good band, because they don’t need all of the auto tuning that so many artists use these days to make sure that they are ‘perfect’. In all honesty they are the best band I have heard live so far (I know that I haven’t seen many but it still counts). The energy at the venue rose considerably when they came on, everyone was jumping and singing, screaming at the top of their lungs and it just made the whole night better to be surrounded by all of these people who came for the same reason that you have, to just come and have a good time listening to an amazing band!
At the end of it all each of the band members threw out a piece of paper as well as picks and the drum sticks. I was literally 2cm away from catching the paper Ronnie threw out. It touched my fingers and if me and my friend swapped positions I would have gotten it. That always seems to happen to me though, I get so close to getting something but I always just miss out. I won’t let that happen at the end of the month when I go to Warped though, I will get something from Hands Like Houses. But now I am off topic…so back to Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.
After they all left the stage not many people moved. All of a sudden a roar of voices started from the crowd ‘ONE MORE SONG’ and ‘ENCORE’ were being screamed out for a good 5 or 10 minutes. We could see some of the stage managers at the side of the stage signalling to stop because they weren’t going to come back out. Due to this several people started to pile out of the venue, two of which were standing right in front me and my friend. We both kind of looked at each other and moved up to the railing and continued to shout out. Then Ronnie walked back out with one of the guys that do all of the sound testing for them and handed him his guitar. He talked with us all for a little, trying to decide on what song to play. He asked us all and we (me, my friend and a random girl standing next to us) decided he should play his favourite song but he couldn’t hear if only one of us called out, so with some quick preparation we called out together and he looked at us and was like ‘I like that’. He then decided on what song to play. It wasn’t one that any of us had heard before. That is because he had never played it outside of the recording studio and it was to be released in their upcoming album next year. This really brought the concert to a very memorable close, to be one of the first people to hear the song, months before everyone else.
So at the end of the night I didn’t leave with anything from the band them selves but I did leave with an awesome shirt, a cd (deluxe edition with bonus dvd) and new EP from Red Jumpsuit Apparatus as well as two albums from Double Lined Minority who were the first support act. As well as this I left with amazing memories and a night that I will never forget. What about everyone else, what experiences have you had at concerts whether they are good, bad; funny, sad. Who have you gone to see, and what was your favourite band?
